The end of Indian summer and moose prints .... again.

Bright blue sky sunny day; but the north wind is blowing and it is the first really bone chilling cold day to be outdoors.  Lou , who is still pulling boats out of the water, called to report exciting news:  a set of moose prints down at the bay shore; immediately I was changing to get out and see.  The north wind slaps you in the face and there is no doubt that this wonderful Indian summer is over, fall is waning and winter is approaching.

The prints: large, deep and distinct .... our second moose report of the year on the Burntside property.  Watchful we will continue to be.  Just this weeks newspaper brought reports from the moose hunt and a large one was taken down by two regional women.  We will hope ‘our moose’ will not fall to a hunter.  We do have no hunting signs posted on the property and that should offer some protection.

Lake residents who stayed on in October have experienced unbelievably warm and sunny weather; quiet and tranquil, feeling much like a private vacation.    We heard the fishing was good with the northern hungry and ready for taking; enjoyable weather to be outdoors has been the norm; unusual and wonderful.  Gardens here have been taken down; excepting the still blooming (and fragrant) purple phlox and second blooming delpheniums; even discovered lacy lobelia that self seeded near the foundation of our home just yesterday while washing windows.

Today will be a good day to tend to indoor projects; the forecast indicates we’ll warm to the mid fifties again later this week.  Indian summer is as good as it gets.
